IN A NUTSHELL
Giz A Break gives people a the break they need, when they need it most. We specialise in delivering outdoor-based health promotion initiatives that we co-design with communities, organisations, and groups. The issues we tackle can be diverse - they include primary prevention, such as the working with people in drought-affected areas to build their resilience and so prevent mental health issues down the track, right through to secondary prevention, such as working with people who are recovering from significant illness. Giz A Break is run by a team of passionate people who live in rural Australia and want to make a difference through grass-roots, meaningful, practical action.
Health promotion initiatives
Giz A Break promotes the prevention, reduction and control of mental and physical health issues that affect regional and rural communities. We develop and provide mental and physical health literacy programs that integrate resilience-building and health-enhancing activities (e.g. involving nutrition education and opportunities to engage in physical exercise and social work) into off-road adventures.
These programs are specifically designed by a team including a qualified social worker, accredited practising dietitian, and a population health practitioner, to improve the mental and physical health of, and as a preventative measure for, people who are experiencing challenges in their lives.
Giz A Break's programs aim to develop participants' health awareness and teach them skills that empower them to seek help for their mental and physical health concerns at an early stage.
Giz a Break also facilitates connections between individuals, professionals from the health services sector and other avenues of support.
Giz A Break also promotes awareness, and public engagement, regarding the mental and physical health issues that regional and rural communities experience. By increasing awareness and a more open dialogue about physical and mental health, the right type of support can be arranged more readily.
WHAT DRIVES US
We’re children at heart - think Pippi Longstocking x 2 with beards. We get excited about stuff. We believe in the good in people. We believe that finding time and space to play is good for young and old. Playing is how we practice being part of a community, coping with setbacks, and celebrating successes. It’s through making experiences in safe environments that we learn how to become resilient, how we learn new, healthier ways of doing things. The purpose of Giz A Break is to create that space.
“RESILIENCE ISN’T AN INNATE CHARACTERISTIC - IT’S A SKILL THAT IS LEARNT OVER TIME, AND IT CAN BE TAUGHT. THAT’S WHAT GIZ A BREAK IS ABOUT.”
